The short answer
Run Settings, System, Storage, Cleanup recommendations first and remove previous Windows installations — that alone often frees 20 to 30 GB after a feature update. Then check hibernation and System Restore, which quietly consume many gigabytes each.
A full drive does not just stop you saving files. Windows needs working space for the page file, updates and temporary data, and performance degrades sharply below roughly 10 percent free. Reclaiming space is often the single most effective speed fix available.
Find out where it went
Settings, System, Storage shows a breakdown by category. Click through the larger entries rather than guessing. For a proper picture, a free disk usage analyser such as WinDirStat or TreeSize shows a visual map of exactly which folders are responsible, which is far more informative than the built-in view.
The big, safe wins
Remove previous Windows installations
Settings, System, Storage, Cleanup recommendations, then tick previous Windows installations and temporary files. After a feature update this is typically 20 to 30 GB. The only thing you give up is the ability to roll back to the old version, so do it once you are confident the update is stable.
Empty the Recycle Bin and Downloads
Both are routinely overlooked and routinely enormous. The Downloads folder in particular accumulates installers nobody needs again.
Turn off or shrink hibernation
The hibernation file is sized to your RAM, so on a 16 GB machine it occupies about 16 GB. If you never hibernate, open a terminal as administrator and run powercfg /hibernate off. On a laptop, consider keeping it and shrinking it instead with powercfg /hibernate /size 40.
Limit System Restore
Search for “Create a restore point”, select your drive, click Configure, and reduce Max Usage to about 5 percent. Restore points are useful; letting them consume 15 percent of the drive is not.
Clear the update cache
If updates have been failing, the SoftwareDistribution folder can grow to many gigabytes. Stop the Windows Update service, rename that folder, and restart the service — Windows rebuilds it clean.
Move large libraries to another drive
Photos, video and game installs are usually the real occupants. Games can be moved between drives from within Steam and the Xbox app without reinstalling. OneDrive can be set to keep files in the cloud rather than locally.
Turn on Storage Sense
Settings, System, Storage, Storage Sense. It automatically clears temporary files and empties the Recycle Bin on a schedule, which stops the problem returning.
Registry cleaners and aggressive optimisers offer little real benefit and can break working installations. Everything genuinely worth deleting is reachable through the built-in tools described above. A disk usage analyser is worth installing; a system cleaner is not.
What not to delete
- Anything in Windows or Program Files by hand. Uninstall applications properly instead.
- The page file, unless you understand the consequences. Windows needs it even with plenty of RAM.
- Drivers for hardware you still own, however old the folder looks.
- WinSxS, the component store. It looks vast in Explorer and is mostly links rather than real files. Use the built-in cleanup tools on it, never manual deletion.
Frequently asked questions
How much free space does Windows need?
Keep at least 10 to 15 percent of the drive free, and at least 20 GB for feature updates to install. Below that you will see both failed updates and general slowness.
Is it safe to delete the Windows.old folder?
Yes, through the Storage cleanup tool rather than by hand. You lose only the option to roll back to the previous Windows version.
Why is my C drive full when my files are small?
Usually update leftovers, hibernation, restore points and app caches rather than documents. A disk usage analyser shows the real distribution in a couple of minutes.
Will adding an SSD fix low disk space?
It adds capacity and, if you are replacing a mechanical drive, a large speed improvement as well. Moving games and media libraries to a second drive is often the cheapest route.
Start with Cleanup recommendations. On a machine that has taken a feature update, that one screen usually returns more space than everything else combined.
