The short answer

Force restart first — it is different from holding the power button and it revives a frozen phone that looks completely dead. If that does nothing, put it on a known-good charger for a full hour before doing anything else. A deeply discharged battery shows no sign of life for 15 to 30 minutes.

A phone showing nothing at all is either flat, frozen, or genuinely faulty, and the first two are far more common. Both are free to rule out.

Step one: force restart

This is not the same as holding power, and it works when the screen is black and the phone is unresponsive:

  • iPhone 8 and newer: press volume up and release, press volume down and release, then press and hold the side button for up to 20 seconds until the Apple logo appears. Ignore any slider.
  • iPhone 7: hold volume down and the side button together.
  • Most Android phones: hold power and volume down together for 20 to 30 seconds.
  • Samsung: hold power and volume down for 10 to 20 seconds.

Hold longer than feels reasonable. People frequently give up at five seconds, and many phones need fifteen or more.

Step two: prove the charging chain

  1. Charge for a full hour on a known-good charger

Use a wall charger, not a laptop port. A deeply flat battery may show nothing at all for the first half hour, and phones in this state sometimes display no charging icon until they have enough charge to render one.

  2. Change one link in the chain at a time

Try a different cable, then a different brick, then a different wall socket. Test the cable and charger on another device to confirm they work rather than assuming.

  3. Clean the charging port

With the phone off, shine a torch inside and look for compacted lint. Scrape it out with a wooden toothpick. A blocked port produces exactly this symptom, and it is the most common physical cause.

  4. Look for any sign of life

Feel for warmth near the port after 15 minutes on charge, listen for vibration, and check in a dark room for a very faint screen glow. Warmth means the battery is accepting charge, which is good news.

  5. Try wireless charging if supported

If the phone charges wirelessly but not by cable, the port or its flex cable has failed — a specific and repairable fault, and one that lets you keep using the phone meanwhile.

  6. Check whether it is the screen rather than the phone

Call it from another phone. If it rings or vibrates, the phone is running and the display has failed, which is an entirely different and often cheaper repair.

If it got wet or was dropped

Do not keep trying to power it on. Each attempt risks driving a short further. Leave it off, do not put it in rice — that does nothing useful and leaves starch dust in the ports — and get it to a repair shop promptly. Corrosion progresses over days.

What the signs mean

  • Charging icon appears, nothing else — software or a boot problem rather than power.
  • Warm but no display — likely a screen or connector fault. Try the ring test.
  • Completely cold after an hour on charge — charging port, battery or board.
  • Boot logo loops repeatedly — a software fault, and your data is probably recoverable.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I charge a completely dead phone?

At least an hour before drawing any conclusion, on a wall charger. Very flat lithium batteries charge at a deliberately reduced rate until they reach a safe voltage, so nothing appears to happen at first.

Will I lose my photos if the phone will not turn on?

Usually not. The storage is separate from the power and display circuits, and a repair shop can often recover data even from a phone that will not boot. Check whether your cloud backup is current in the meantime.

Does putting a wet phone in rice work?

No. It is no better than open air and it introduces starch dust into the ports. Power it off, leave it somewhere dry and warm but not hot, and get it professionally cleaned.

Why does my phone only turn on when plugged in?

The battery is no longer holding charge. That is a battery replacement, which is one of the cheaper repairs and usually well worth doing.

Force restart, then an hour on a known-good charger. Between them they revive most phones that look dead.
