The short answer

Run powercfg /batteryreport in a Windows terminal and open the HTML file it creates. It shows the battery’s true capacity against its original design capacity, plus recent usage. That single command tells you whether the battery is worn or something is draining it.

Battery complaints split cleanly in two: a healthy battery being drained faster than it should be, and a battery that has simply worn out. The battery report distinguishes them in about a minute, which saves buying a replacement that changes nothing.

Check the battery’s actual health first

Windows: open Terminal or Command Prompt and run powercfg /batteryreport. It writes an HTML file and tells you where. Open it and compare Full Charge Capacity with Design Capacity. At 70 percent or below, the battery is genuinely worn and no software change will restore runtime. The report also lists recent usage and battery life estimates over time, which shows whether the decline was gradual or sudden.

macOS: hold Option and click the Apple menu, then System Information, Power. Look at cycle count and condition.

If the battery is healthy, find what is using it

  1. Check which apps are consuming power

Windows: Settings, System, Power and battery, Battery usage. It breaks consumption down per app over the last week. macOS: Activity Monitor, Energy tab. Look for anything with high usage that you do not actively use.

  2. Look at what runs at startup

Task Manager, Startup apps, sorted by impact. Cloud sync clients, game launchers, communication apps and updater services all run permanently and cost real battery life.

  3. Check the graphics setting

Laptops with two graphics chips should use the integrated one on battery. If a discrete GPU is being used for ordinary work, battery life collapses. In the NVIDIA or AMD control panel, confirm the power-saving GPU is the default, and check no application has been pinned to high performance.

  4. Lower the screen brightness

The display is usually the single largest consumer. Dropping from full to around 50 percent often adds a meaningful amount of runtime, more than most software tweaks.

  5. Set the power mode properly

Settings, System, Power and battery, Power mode, set to Balanced or Best power efficiency while on battery. Machines left in Best performance drain far faster for no benefit during light work.

  6. Check sleep behaviour

Modern standby keeps the machine partly awake, and a laptop that loses 30 percent overnight in a bag is suffering from this. In the advanced power settings, make sure it hibernates after a period rather than sleeping indefinitely.

  7. Update drivers, particularly chipset and graphics

Power management lives largely in drivers. A generic Windows-installed driver commonly uses more power than the manufacturer’s own.

Use the conservation mode if the laptop lives on a desk

Most manufacturers offer a setting that caps charging at 60 or 80 percent, which substantially slows battery ageing for a machine that is mains-powered most of the time. Lenovo calls it Conservation Mode, ASUS Battery Health Charging, Dell has it in Power Manager.

Frequently asked questions

When should I replace a laptop battery?

When full charge capacity falls below roughly 70 percent of design capacity, or when the machine shuts down unexpectedly at moderate charge levels. Both are visible in the battery report.

Does leaving a laptop plugged in ruin the battery?

It ages it faster than cycling in the middle of its range, especially when warm. Conservation modes exist precisely for this, and are worth enabling on a desk machine.

Why does my laptop lose charge while asleep?

Modern standby keeps parts of the system running to sync mail and updates. Configuring it to hibernate after a period stops overnight losses in a bag.

Do battery calibration tools help?

Rarely on modern hardware. A full discharge and recharge can correct a misreporting gauge, but it does not restore capacity. Treat any tool promising to revive a worn battery with scepticism.

Run the battery report first. It tells you in one screen whether you are fixing software or buying a battery.
