The short answer

If @ and ” have swapped, or the pound and hash keys are wrong, Windows has switched from UK to US layout. Press Windows key and Space to cycle layouts, then remove the unwanted one in Settings, Time and language, Language and region so it cannot come back.

A keyboard producing the wrong symbols is almost never faulty. The physical keys send position codes, and the operating system decides which character each position means. Change that mapping and a perfectly good keyboard starts lying to you.

The classic symptoms

  • @ and ” swapped — UK keyboard running a US layout, or the reverse. By far the most common.
  • The pound sign produces a hash — same cause.
  • Letters producing numbers on a laptop — Num Lock is on and the number pad is overlaid on the letter keys.
  • Everything in capitals — Caps Lock, or a stuck Shift key.
  • Accented characters appearing — an international layout with dead keys is active.

Fixing it

  1. Cycle the layout

Press Windows and Space together. If you have more than one layout installed, this switches between them and you will usually see the correct characters return immediately. On a Mac, use Control and Space, or the flag in the menu bar.

  2. Remove the unwanted layout entirely

Settings, Time and language, Language and region. Click the three dots beside your language, Language options, then under Keyboards remove any layout you do not use. If only one remains, the shortcut cannot switch you away from it by accident again.

  3. Check Num Lock on a laptop

If letters are producing numbers, press Num Lock, often as Fn plus a key marked NumLk. Compact laptops overlay a number pad on the right-hand letters, and it is easy to enable without noticing.

  4. Turn off Sticky Keys and Filter Keys

Settings, Accessibility, Keyboard. Sticky Keys latches modifiers and gets enabled by pressing Shift five times, which happens by accident in games. Filter Keys ignores brief keystrokes, which feels like a failing keyboard.

  5. Test in a different application

Type in Notepad as well as in your browser and your word processor. If the problem appears in only one application, it is that program’s own settings or an add-in, not the system.

  6. Try an external keyboard

If an external keyboard behaves correctly, the fault is the laptop’s built-in keyboard. If both are wrong, it is the layout, and the steps above apply.

If only some keys are dead

That pattern points at hardware rather than layout, most often liquid damage or debris. Dead keys clustered together are typical of a spill; keys scattered randomly suggest a failing membrane or ribbon cable. Layout problems never affect only a few keys.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my keyboard layout change on its own?

Almost always the Windows and Space shortcut pressed by accident, or a second layout installed by a language pack or a game. Removing the extra layout prevents it recurring.

Why does my keyboard type numbers instead of letters?

Num Lock is on and your laptop has an embedded number pad across the right-hand letter keys. Press Num Lock, usually with Fn, to switch it off.

Can I fix a keyboard after a liquid spill?

Sometimes, if you power the machine off immediately and get it dried and cleaned professionally before corrosion sets in. Sugary liquids are worse than water because the residue makes keys stick permanently.

How do I type a character my layout does not have?

Windows has a Character Map, and Windows key with full stop opens the emoji and symbol picker. For occasional use that is quicker than changing layout.

Press Windows and Space first. It fixes the vast majority of keyboards that appear to have gone wrong overnight.
