The short answer

iPad plus Mac: use Sidecar, built in and free. iPad plus Windows: use Duet Display or Spacedesk. Android plus Windows: Spacedesk is the simplest free option. Android plus Android or ChromeOS: use the built-in extend feature where available. Wired always beats wireless for lag.

A tablet sitting in a drawer is a perfectly good 10 or 11 inch display, and turning it into a second monitor is the single most useful thing you can do with an older one. The setup takes about five minutes. The only real decision is which method to use, and that depends entirely on which two devices you are pairing.

iPad with a Mac: Sidecar

This is the cleanest option because it is built into both operating systems and needs no software.

  1. Check both devices are signed into the same Apple Account

Sidecar requires the same account with two-factor authentication enabled on both.

  2. Turn on Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Handoff on both devices

They also need to be within about ten metres of each other. Alternatively connect them with a cable, which is more reliable and charges the iPad at the same time.

  3. On the Mac, open Control Centre and choose Screen Mirroring

Select your iPad from the list. On older macOS versions this lives under System Settings, then Displays.

  4. Choose Extend rather than Mirror

Extend gives you a genuine second desktop. Mirror just duplicates what is already on the Mac screen.

  5. Arrange the displays

In System Settings, then Displays, drag the iPad rectangle to match where the tablet physically sits on your desk, so the cursor crosses the edge in the right direction.

Sidecar also gives you Apple Pencil input on the extended display, which makes it genuinely useful for drawing apps rather than just a place to park a chat window.

iPad with a Windows PC

There is no built-in option here, so you need software on both ends. Duet Display is the long-standing paid choice and supports a wired USB connection, which keeps latency low enough for video. Spacedesk is free and works over Wi-Fi, with more lag but no cost. Both install a display driver on Windows, so expect one restart during setup.

For a wired connection, use the cable that came with the iPad and make sure it is a data cable rather than a charge-only one, which is the most common reason the PC never detects the tablet.

Android tablet with a Windows PC

Spacedesk is the straightforward answer. Install the Windows driver, install the Android app, make sure both devices are on the same network, and the tablet will appear in the app’s server list. Windows then treats it as a real display, so you can extend, set resolution and arrange it in Display Settings normally.

Tip

Put both devices on the 5 GHz band, not 2.4 GHz. Wireless display over 2.4 GHz in a typical home is the difference between usable and unbearable, because the band is congested and the frame rate collapses. If your router shows both bands under one name, temporarily separating them is worth the effort.

Android tablet with an Android phone or Chromebook

Recent Android and ChromeOS versions include a native extend-display feature over USB-C, provided the tablet supports DisplayPort input, which many do not. Check your tablet’s specification for DisplayPort Alt Mode input rather than output. If it is not there, fall back to a third-party app over Wi-Fi.

Reducing lag, whatever you use

  • Prefer wired. A USB cable removes the network entirely and cuts latency to a level where video is watchable.
  • Lower the resolution on the tablet display. Running a tablet at its full retina resolution over Wi-Fi is a lot of pixels to push. Dropping one step often doubles the frame rate.
  • Turn off HDR and high frame rate settings on the tablet if the app offers them.
  • Put static content on the tablet. Chat, email, documentation, Spotify, a terminal. Keep video and anything with fast motion on the real monitor.
  • Close background sync on both devices during use, because any bandwidth contention shows up immediately as stutter.

What an older tablet is genuinely good for

Do not expect a second gaming display. A tablet as a second screen is excellent for a chat window, a reference document, a to-do list, monitoring dashboards, a music player, or a video call while you work on the main screen. If the tablet is more than about six years old, it may not run current versions of the apps involved, in which case a cheap portable monitor is a better use of money than fighting with it.

Good to know

Battery matters more than people expect. Acting as a display keeps the screen at full brightness and the radio busy, which drains a tablet quickly. Plan on it being plugged in, which is another argument for the wired method, since one cable does both jobs.

Mounting it so it is actually usable

A tablet lying flat on the desk is uncomfortable to look at for long. Get it up to roughly the same height as your main monitor. A cheap adjustable tablet stand works, and so does a clamp arm if you want it floating beside the main screen. The goal is that your neck does not move to a different angle every time you glance at it, because that is what makes people abandon the setup after a week.

Does using a tablet as a second monitor damage it?

No, but running the screen at full brightness for hours accelerates normal battery ageing, particularly if it is kept plugged in at 100 percent. Enable any battery health or charge-limit option your tablet offers.

Can I use the tablet touchscreen to control the computer?

With most apps, yes. Duet and Sidecar both pass touch and stylus input back to the computer, so you can tap and scroll on the tablet. Spacedesk supports touch as well, though with more lag.

Why is the text blurry on the tablet display?

The extended display is probably running at a non-native resolution and being scaled. Set the resolution in the computer’s display settings to one the tablet reports natively, or use the app’s own quality setting.

Will this work without Wi-Fi?

Wired methods work with no network at all. Some apps can also create a direct connection between devices, but a USB cable is simpler and faster.

Is a portable monitor better than a tablet?

For pure display use, yes: no lag, no battery concerns, no software. A tablet wins if you already own it and want it to do both jobs.

Pick your path

iPad and Mac, use Sidecar. iPad and Windows, use Duet wired. Android and Windows, use Spacedesk on 5 GHz. In every case, go wired if you can, drop the resolution a step, and keep motion-heavy content on the main screen. Put the tablet on a stand at eye level and it stops being a novelty and becomes part of the desk.
