You miss calls and only find out when you look at the screen. Because the phone is otherwise working normally, the cause is almost always a setting rather than a fault, and there are four places it usually hides.
The short answer
Check the ringer volume specifically, since it is a separate slider from media and the side buttons usually adjust media instead. Then check whether a focus or do not disturb mode is active, including scheduled ones you set months ago. Those two account for most silent phones.
Ringer volume is its own channel
Phones have several independent volume channels: ringer, media, notifications and alarms. Pressing the side buttons adjusts whichever is currently in use, which is usually media. It is entirely possible to have media at full volume and the ringer near silent, and nothing on screen makes that obvious.
Open the sound settings and look at each slider separately. On many phones there is also a setting controlling whether the side buttons adjust the ringer or media by default, which is worth setting deliberately.
Check the ringer slider in sound settings
Not the side buttons. Open the sound settings and look at the ringer volume specifically, separately from media and notifications.
Check the silent or vibrate switch
Some phones have a physical switch, easily moved in a pocket. Others have a quick settings toggle. Check both.
Check focus and do not disturb modes
Including scheduled ones. A sleep focus set months ago that runs longer than you remember, or a work focus that never ended, will silence calls exactly as configured.
Check which contacts are allowed through
Focus modes let you allow calls from favourites or specific people. If some calls ring and others do not, this is why, and it is working as designed.
Check for a silenced contact
Individual contacts can be muted or blocked. If it is only one person whose calls do not ring, open their contact card and look.
Check silence unknown callers
Both platforms have a setting sending calls from numbers not in your contacts straight to voicemail. Useful against spam, and it silences legitimate calls from anyone new.
Check the ringtone itself
If the ringtone is set to a music file that has been deleted or moved, the phone may ring silently. Switch to a built-in tone as a test.
Check Bluetooth
A paired speaker or earbuds out of range but still connected can take the ringtone with them. Turn Bluetooth off and test.
Test it properly rather than waiting to miss another call. Ask someone to ring you, or use a second phone, with your phone locked and face down. Do this after every change so you know which one worked, and after every system update, since updates reset exactly these settings.
The focus mode problem
Focus modes are the most common cause and the hardest to spot, because they are designed to be unobtrusive. A mode can be triggered by a schedule, by location, by connecting to a car, or by opening a particular app, and none of those announce themselves loudly.
Go through every focus mode you have configured, not just the one you think is active, and check both the schedule and the allowed-callers list on each. A sleep focus set to run until nine in the morning silences an entire morning of calls, and most people set that once and never look at it again.
If calls matter, check this after every system update. Updates commonly reset focus configurations and notification permissions, and a phone that has rung reliably for a year can go silent after an update you barely noticed installing.
When it is the network rather than the phone
If the phone does not ring and you also have no missed call notification, the call may not be reaching you at all. Check:
- Call forwarding. Enabled accidentally or left over from an old setup, it sends calls elsewhere without ringing. Check the call settings.
- Wi-Fi calling. If enabled on a poor connection, calls can fail to arrive. Turn it off as a test.
- Airplane mode partially left on, or mobile data disabled in a way affecting calls.
- A network registration problem. Toggle airplane mode to force re-registration.
- A blocked number list that has grown by accident.
The distinction: a silenced call still shows as missed. A call that never arrived shows nothing at all, and that points at the network or forwarding rather than the ringer.
Why is my ringer silent when media plays loudly?
They are separate volume channels and the side buttons usually adjust media. Open the sound settings and set the ringer slider specifically.
Why do some people's calls ring and others do not?
A focus mode allowing only certain contacts, an individually silenced contact, or the setting that sends unknown callers straight to voicemail.
Could a focus mode be on without me noticing?
Easily. They trigger on schedules, locations, car connections and app activity, and they are designed to be unobtrusive. Check every mode you have configured, not just the active one.
The call does not even show as missed. What does that mean?
The call is not reaching the phone at all. Check call forwarding, Wi-Fi calling and your blocked list, since a silenced call still records as missed.
Why did this start after an update?
Updates reset focus configurations and notification settings regularly. Re-check them after every major update if calls matter to you.
The bottom line
Check the ringer slider in the sound settings rather than assuming the side buttons cover it, and go through every focus mode including scheduled ones. If calls are not even showing as missed, the problem is call forwarding or the network rather than the ringer. Test with a second phone after each change, and re-check after system updates.
