The short answer

Turn on high accuracy or precise location, which lets the phone combine GPS with Wi-Fi and mobile data rather than relying on satellites alone. Recalibrate the compass with a figure-of-eight motion, make sure Wi-Fi scanning is enabled even if Wi-Fi is off, and check the app has precise rather than approximate location permission.

Your phone does not simply read a GPS position. It combines satellite signals, nearby Wi-Fi network identifiers matched against a database, mobile tower positions, and its own motion sensors. When location is wrong, one of those inputs is missing or misleading, and knowing which narrows the fix.

Fix 1: the location mode

Phones offer a setting that determines which sources are used. On Android it is Location accuracy or Google Location Accuracy; on iPhone it is Precise Location per app plus Location Services generally.

With the high accuracy option off, the phone relies more heavily on satellites, which is slow to acquire, poor indoors and useless in a dense city with tall buildings. Turning it on allows Wi-Fi and mobile network positioning, which is what makes location instant and accurate in built-up areas.

  1. Enable high accuracy mode

Settings, Location, then the accuracy or improve accuracy option.

  2. Enable Wi-Fi scanning even when Wi-Fi is off

Under Location services or scanning settings. This lets the phone use Wi-Fi identifiers for positioning without connecting to anything.

  3. Enable Bluetooth scanning too

It improves indoor accuracy where beacons exist, particularly in shopping centres and airports.

  4. Check the app's own permission

Precise rather than approximate. Many phones now default new apps to approximate location, which is deliberately vague.

  5. Turn off battery saver

It restricts location updates, which produces a position that lags behind where you actually are.

Fix 2: recalibrate the compass

If the position is right but the direction is wrong, or the map spins, that is the magnetometer rather than GPS. Open the maps app and move the phone in a figure-of-eight pattern several times, which is the standard calibration gesture.

Magnets are the usual cause of persistent compass problems: magnetic car mounts, cases with magnetic closures, and magnetic wallet attachments all interfere. If the compass is reliably wrong, remove the case and test.

Fix 3: the environment

  • Tall buildings reflect satellite signals, producing a position that jumps between streets. This is a physical limitation and Wi-Fi positioning is what corrects it.
  • Indoors, satellites are largely unavailable. Wi-Fi positioning is doing the work, which is why disabling Wi-Fi scanning makes indoor accuracy much worse.
  • In a vehicle, heated windscreens and metallised glass attenuate satellite signals significantly. A phone on the dashboard performs better than one in a pocket.
  • Underground or in tunnels, the phone estimates using motion sensors until it reacquires.
Tip

After a long flight or a period with location switched off, a phone can take several minutes to acquire a position properly, because the stored satellite data is out of date. Standing outside with a clear view of the sky for two or three minutes resolves it, and this explains a great deal of apparent GPS failure on holiday.

Fix 4: software

  • Restart the phone, which resets the location service cleanly.
  • Update the maps app and the system, since positioning improvements ship regularly.
  • Clear the maps app’s cache, which resolves a stale stored position.
  • Check for a VPN, which does not change GPS but does change what web services think your location is, producing inconsistency between apps.
  • Check location spoofing apps are not installed and active, including ones installed for a game and forgotten.
  • Turn off developer options mock location if it has been enabled.

Fix 5: when only one app is wrong

If maps are accurate and a specific app shows the wrong place, the app is either using approximate location, using your IP address rather than the device location, or caching an old position. Check the permission first, then reinstall the app, then contact the developer, because this is not a phone problem.

Websites in particular usually locate you by IP address, which reflects your internet provider rather than your position and can be tens of kilometres out. That is normal and not something the phone can improve.

Careful

If your location appears in a completely different country, check for a VPN first, then check whether a family sharing or find-my-device service is showing another person’s device rather than yours. Both are far more common explanations than a GPS fault.

Fix 6: hardware

Genuine GPS hardware failure is rare and does happen, usually after water damage or a drop. Signs are a phone that never acquires a satellite position outdoors with a clear sky after several minutes, in any app, with all the settings above correct. Diagnostic apps can show satellite counts and signal strength directly, which gives you a clear answer before visiting a repair shop.

Why is my location accurate outdoors but wrong indoors?

Because satellites are unavailable indoors and the phone relies on Wi-Fi positioning instead. If Wi-Fi scanning is disabled, indoor accuracy collapses. Enabling scanning while leaving Wi-Fi off is the fix.

Does GPS use mobile data?

Receiving satellite signals uses none. The assistance data that speeds up the first fix, and Wi-Fi and tower positioning, do use a small amount of data. Offline maps work with GPS alone.

Why does the map keep rotating the wrong way?

The compass needs calibrating. Move the phone in a figure-of-eight several times, and check for magnets in the case or the car mount, which are the usual cause of persistent errors.

Does a case affect GPS?

Most do not. Cases containing metal plates for magnetic mounts, and heavily armoured cases, can attenuate the signal noticeably. Test without the case if accuracy is consistently poor.

Why do websites think I am in another city?

Websites usually locate by IP address, which reflects your internet provider’s infrastructure rather than your position. That is unrelated to the phone’s GPS and cannot be corrected from the phone.

The short version

Turn on high accuracy and Wi-Fi scanning, give the app precise location permission, and turn off battery saver. Calibrate the compass with a figure-of-eight and check for magnets in the case. Give the phone a few minutes outdoors after a flight or a long period without location. And if only one app is wrong, the app is the problem rather than the phone.
