The short answer

Scanning and printing are separate services, so printing working tells you nothing about scanning. Check the scan software is installed and running on the computer, that the firewall allows it, and that the computer is discoverable on the network. Reserve the printer’s IP address, which fixes the most common cause of scanning breaking after a few weeks.

Printing pushes data from the computer to the printer. Scanning to a computer pushes data the other way, which means the printer has to find the computer, and the computer has to be listening. That is why scanning breaks far more often than printing, and why the fixes are different.

Step 1: which direction are you scanning?

  • Scanning from the computer, using the scan software, means the computer initiates. If this works, the path is fine and any scan-to-computer problem is about discovery.
  • Scanning from the printer’s panel to a computer, which requires the printer to find the computer and the computer to accept it. This is the one that breaks.
  • Scanning to email or a folder, which uses the printer’s own network configuration and does not involve the computer at all.

Establishing which one fails narrows the problem immediately.

Step 2: the computer side

  1. Check the scan software is installed

Many people install only the printer driver, which does not include the scanning component. Install the full software package from the manufacturer, or add the scanner separately in Windows under Printers and scanners.

  2. Check the manufacturer's scan service is running

Several manufacturers install a background service that listens for scan requests. If it has been disabled or blocked, scanning from the printer panel stops while printing continues.

  3. Allow it through the firewall

Both the scan application and its service need to accept incoming connections on the private network. Security software updates commonly reset this.

  4. Set the network profile to Private

On a Public network profile, Windows blocks the discovery that scan-to-computer relies on.

  5. Enable network discovery

Under advanced sharing settings, for the private network profile.

Step 3: the printer side

  • Reserve a fixed IP address for the printer in the router. Scanning configurations store the address, and a changed address breaks them silently.
  • Check the printer and computer are on the same network, not one on a guest network. Client isolation on a guest network blocks scanning entirely.
  • Re-register the computer on the printer. Most printers keep a list of computers available as scan destinations, built when the software was installed. Running the setup again refreshes it.
  • Update the printer firmware, since scan services are firmware-implemented and do receive fixes.
  • Check the printer’s own scan settings, particularly whether scan-to-computer is enabled, which some models allow disabling.
Tip

If scanning worked and stopped a few weeks later with nothing changed, the printer’s IP address almost certainly changed when its lease expired. A DHCP reservation in the router prevents that permanently and is the single most effective fix for intermittent scanning problems.

Step 4: alternatives that avoid the problem

Scan-to-computer is the most fragile path. Three alternatives are more robust:

  • Scan from the computer using the scan software or the built-in Windows Scan app. The computer initiates, so no discovery is needed.
  • Scan to email from the printer, configured once with your mail settings. Useful and slow for large documents.
  • Scan to a network folder or a USB stick, which removes the computer from the equation entirely and is the most reliable of the three.
  • Use the manufacturer’s mobile app, which usually handles discovery better than the desktop path and saves straight to the phone.

If scan-to-computer keeps breaking, switching to scan-to-folder is a permanent solution rather than a workaround.

Step 5: driver problems

Windows and macOS both include generic scanner support, and manufacturer software adds features on top. Where the manufacturer’s software has become unreliable, removing it entirely and using the operating system’s own scanning is often more stable, at the cost of some features such as multi-page settings and document feeder options.

On macOS, adding the scanner through Printers and Scanners and using Image Capture avoids the manufacturer’s software completely. On Windows, the Windows Scan app does the same. Both are worth trying before reinstalling a large software suite for the third time.

Careful

Be wary of large printer software suites that install browser extensions, update services and shopping assistants. They are a common source of the background processes that later conflict with security software. Installing the driver and scan component only, where the manufacturer offers that choice, avoids a category of future problems.

Why can I print but not scan?

They are separate services using different network paths. Printing pushes data to the printer; scanning to a computer requires the printer to find the computer, which firewalls and address changes frequently break.

Why did scanning stop working after a few weeks?

The printer’s IP address changed when its DHCP lease expired, and the stored scan configuration still points at the old one. A reservation in the router fixes it permanently.

Does a firewall block scanning?

It can, because the scan service must accept incoming connections. Allowing the manufacturer’s scan application and service on the private network usually resolves it.

Is scan to folder better than scan to computer?

More reliable, yes, because the printer writes to a network location rather than needing to discover a computer that may be asleep. It is a good permanent answer for a household printer.

Can I scan without the manufacturer's software?

Yes. Windows Scan and macOS Image Capture both work with most network scanners and are often more stable, at the cost of some advanced options.

The order

Establish which direction is failing. Install the scan component, not just the printer driver, and allow it through the firewall on a private network profile. Reserve the printer’s IP address in the router. Re-run the setup so the printer relearns the computer. And if it keeps breaking, switch to scan-to-folder, which does not depend on discovery at all.
