Phone Says Storage Full When Taking Photos? Free Space the Right Way

The short answer

Empty the Recently Deleted album first — deleted photos sit there for 30 days still occupying space, and this is the fastest gigabyte you will recover. Then clear messaging app media, which is usually the largest single consumer on a busy phone.

When a phone refuses to take a photo, the useful question is which quick wins return the most space for the least loss. The answer is rarely the photos themselves.

Fastest wins, in order

  1. Empty Recently Deleted

Photos, Albums, Recently Deleted, then Delete All. Photos you deleted in the last 30 days are still stored. On Android the equivalent is the Bin in Google Photos. This alone often returns several gigabytes immediately.

  2. Clear messaging app media

WhatsApp, Messenger and iMessage store every photo, video and voice note ever sent to you. In WhatsApp, Settings, Storage and data, Manage storage shows the largest items and lets you delete media while keeping conversations. On a busy phone this is frequently 10 to 30 GB.

  3. Delete downloaded streaming content

Netflix, Spotify, YouTube and podcast apps hoard downloads. Podcast apps in particular keep episodes you have already listened to. Check each app’s downloads section directly.

  4. Offload apps rather than deleting them

On iPhone, Settings, General, iPhone Storage, and offload large apps you rarely use — the app goes, the data stays, and reinstalling restores everything. On Android, uninstall and reinstall, since data is usually backed up to your account.

  5. Turn on cloud optimisation so it stops recurring

iPhone: Settings, Photos, Optimise iPhone Storage. Android: Google Photos, free up space after backup. This keeps full-resolution copies in the cloud and smaller ones on the device, which is the permanent fix rather than another temporary clear-out.

  6. Change the camera settings

Record video at 1080p rather than 4K for everyday use, and enable the high-efficiency photo format. A minute of 4K at 60fps is roughly 400 MB, so this halves how fast the problem returns.

Make sure the backup finished before deleting

If iCloud Photos or Google Photos sync is switched on, deleting a photo on the phone deletes it everywhere, because it is a sync rather than a backup. Confirm the upload has completed before any bulk deletion, and be cautious with third-party cleaner apps that promise to free space automatically.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my phone say storage full when I have deleted photos?

They are in Recently Deleted for 30 days and still occupy space. Empty that album to actually recover it.

What is taking up the most space on my phone?

Usually messaging app attachments and downloaded video, not the camera roll. The storage screen in settings ranks apps by size and shows this quickly.

Does deleting apps delete their data?

Uninstalling generally does. Offloading on iPhone specifically keeps the data so reinstalling restores everything, which makes it the safer option for large apps.

Will buying more iCloud or Google storage fix it?

It fixes it permanently only if you also enable the optimise or free-up-space setting, which is what actually removes the local copies. Cloud space alone changes nothing on the device.

Empty Recently Deleted, then clear messaging media. Five minutes usually gets the camera working again.
